The alternator has a global three-year warranty failure rate of less than 1%, Mitsubishi said, and is built to be a PAD-mount, 145-amp product with a brushless design. The alternator weighs in at 20 lbs. The Long Haul Alternator (AL9960LH), intended for trucks, buses and heavy equipment, produces 160 amps on the road and 80 amps at idle. The alternator''s higher charge rate at idle prolongs battery life and its high-efficiency design reduces heat damage and component wear in the harsh, over-the-road environment in which it is designed to serve, says company. Other features include high-efficiency winding technology that uses 30 percent more copper than conventional replacement alternators; a heat-dissipating regulator and rectifier; dual internal cooling fans which draw air from both front and back of the alternator; and a reduced slip ring diameter to help reduce carbon brush wear. Remy International has designed a new alternator to handle the higher heat output of today''s low-emission engines. "We made internal changes, such as insulating the cooper wire to help cool it down, along with external modifications so we pull in more air but from different places," said Mike Crull, Remy''s engineering manager, at the annual TMC meeting in Tampa.
