Twining up the canes, however, are two clematis each--various varieties--the eight vines all blooming at different times in a kaleidoscope of colors. Caren planned it this way not just because she didn''t want the flower colors to mix, but because it makes maintenance easier. "If the clematis and the roses were allowed to grow and flower together, they would get all tangled up and be too hard to prune." The choice of Constance Spry, the English rose, also has its basis in ease of maintenance. "It is a one-time bloomer, but it blooms quite a long time," Caren says. "If it was a repeat bloomer, I''d have to get up there and deadhead it all the time to keep it going."
