In response to these discourses, Goldstein''s Laughter out of Place depicts how, despite the absence of legally sanctioned racism, the structures of racism are present in everyday discourses and relationships in Brazil. Her ethnography is the result of more than a decade of fieldwork done in the 1990s in one of Rio''s urban shantytown communities. It explores the lives of the impoverished, largely illiterate and historically oppressed population of favela women. The ethnographic material used in the book illustrates the ways in which race is discussed, joked about, alluded to and operated upon by these women in their everyday life. Goldstein''s friend and main informant, Gloria, offers the anthropologist a subtle insight into the political and economic forces and the structures of power within which these impoverished communities are embedded.
